Andrea Gibson was an American poet and activist whose poetry highlighted politics, justice, life & mortality + more. They were largely recognized as a writer who led the resurgence of spoken word-style of poetry in the 2000s. Gibson's first poetry book "Pole Dancing To Gospel Hymns" came out in 2008, and was followed by "The Madness Vase and Pansy". Since then, Gibson kept writing and touching lives as the days went by. Deep thoughts and reflective lessons, their work packed with food for thought to carry onto the afterlife.
Their album "Yellowbird" served music with spoken word, sharing something unique and powerful. In Gibson's next album "Flower Boy", they confronted fear through poems that hit right home. Beyond her poetry that focused on social & political commentaries, Gibson participated in many activist groups. They performed with Vox Feminista, described as a "performance tribe of radical feminists bent on social change through cultural revolution".
A four-time Denver Grand Slam Champion, truly a trailblazer in spoken word. Their awards include placing fourth and third place, respectively, in the 2004 National Poetry Slam, and in 2006 and 2007 Individual World Poetry Slam. Gibson was honored as Women of the World Poetry Slam Award's first-ever recipent in 2008. They were also appointed as the ninth Colorado Poety Laureate as the first non-binary writer to hold the position, recognized for highlighting spoken word and their passion for LGBTQ+ rights.
Gibson along with their wife were featured in the "Come See Me in the Good Light" documentary, navigating their marriage and their journey through Gibson's terminal cancer diagnosis. A love story so close to the heart, the production was casual yet deeply emotional. A "love letter" dedicated to spreading as much life in their final days, it's a pleasure to see the couple's intimate moments and candid conversations.
With "Love Letters from the Afterlife" sharing what a warm embrace is like, it's clear that Gibson pours out their heart in every masterpiece - down to their very last. Their four-year battle with cancer shared as much life, wherein the next life is likened to find them returning home, rather than leaving elsewhere.
