Before diving into music, Mike was actually a former baseball player, attended Duke University and then Georgetown University. While he recovered from surgery, he shifted his focus to music. In December 2010, he dropped a video for "College Humor", a track he initially made as a joke, yet unexpectedly became viral as it amassed millions of views. Dropping mixtapes and his debut album by 2013, the man soon became a highly-sought artist for his frat-party hip hop vibes.
In an interview with VICE early on in his music career, Mike described how it all began. "During the time of rehab I had just gotten a new Mac and I started to mess around a little bit on GarageBand and I literally made my first project on GarageBand with no engineering, no help," he shared about his accidental journey into music. "I mean I made one song called “College Humor,”" describing it as a gimmicky track that caught on. He says it "was the most virally driven thing ever," not really planning to do music" but then he made songs for fun during his free time.
"I’m enjoying it, and I’m taking it seriously, but I want to see where it goes."
