Film on the Rocks is an annual summer series produced by the non-profit organization Denver Film and owner of the world-famous Red Rocks Amphitheater, Denver Arts & Venues. On its 24th season, Film on the Rocks features several movies on a state-of-the-art screen. Last year, Film on the Rocks made its much-anticipated return to the amphitheater. In the past few years, the screening was held in a drive-in setup due to the pandemic. Since 2022, Film on the Rocks has taken place inside the amphitheater, and viewers can now watch from the comfort of the venue’s seats.

Film on the Rocks kicks off in June and will run until August 21. The varieties of films offered include Top Gun Maverick, Mama Mia, Raiders of the Lost Arts, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Viewers can also look forward to some pre-movie entertainment on select dates. The event will also have a number of delicious snacks and refreshments sold by concessionaires.

Top Gun Maverick is a sequel to the 1986 film Top Gun. The action-drama movie stars Tom Cruise who plays the role of naval aviator Captain Pete Mitchell, a.k.a. “Maverick.” The film’s timeline takes place 30 years after Mitchell graduates from the elite Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor Program, Top Gun. The story begins with Mitchell test-driving a top-secret hypersonic aircraft, the Darkstar. The program was ordered to stop by the Navy in favor of focusing their funds on drones. In an attempt to save the program, Mitchell took off with the aircraft, aiming to reach the contract’s target speed of Mach 9. Unfortunately, Mitchell crashes the Billion Dollar aircraft.

Instead of being sanctioned for destroying a very expensive prototype, Maverick’s career was saved by his friend, Iceman, also known as Admiral Tom Kazansky. Mitchell was transferred to the new Top Gun program. The school aims to teach a new generation of pilots to destroy an illegal uranium enrichment plant in an unnamed enemy state.
